In The Army Now revives all the basic service comedy situations going all the way back to Abbott&Costello in Buck Privates. Pauly, Andy, and their new friends David Alan Grier and Lori Petty are in the Sahara Desert as part of a water purification team, water boys as they're derisively called by those in the real army. Actually Libya and Chad did have border conflicts for many years with the French attacking as protectors for Chad. But Libya and Chad go to war and like the Iraqi Desert Storm, the reserves are called up for a United Nations multi-national force. That extra money for attending those Army Reserve drills sounds pretty enticing so they decide to be all that they can be on the weekends and two weeks in the summer. Pauly Shore and Andy Dick are a pair of misfits in civilian life and find they have a cash flow problem.

The group I hung out with I'm afraid, all people who were trying to get out of the real army and Vietnam joined the reserves as I did. It takes me back to my younger days when I was a weekend warrior. US Army water purification units have neither requirement, nor the equipment to improve the taste of their water.Īlthough there's a lot of people who don't like Pauly Shore, apparently you either love him or hate him, I have to say that I found this film quite amusing. Finally, purified water in the Army must meet certain requirements, none of which include taste. Either way, Fred would likely be the senior ranking Soldier in the group. Even if he hadn't completed his Bachelor's, Fred would probably have enough college credit to begin his enlistment as a PFC. Anyone who enlists in the US Army with a Bachelor's Degree would start as a SPC (E4). Dental school is a graduate level school, which means Fred already has a Bachelor's Degree. The one likely exception would be Fred, who mentions that he is a dental student. As a result, they would all advance to PFC at the same time. Bones, Jack, Christine, and Fred all graduated from water purification training at the same time, so presumably they have all been in the Army for the same amount of time. Promotion to SGT requires additional training (the Primary Leadership Development Course, at the time of filming) and selection by a promotion board. All advancements in rank from E1 to E4 are automatic after a certain amount of time in the Army. Changes in rank from Private (PVT/E1) through Specialist (SPC/E4) are treated as "advancements" because the rank does not convey additional responsibility, only additional pay and seniority. Enlisted men in the US Army are not "promoted" until they reach the rank of Sergeant (SGT/E5).
